A PABX is a central device in the telephony network which is hardware by itself with physical switchboards to route voice calls and connects them from one phone line to another. A softswitch does the same functions but it uses the means of software running on computer systems and servers. The softswitch controls at the central point between the circuit and the packet networks.
A softswitch is an open source voice communications. The power of any softswitch lies in its customizable nature, complemented by unmatched standards-compliance. Besides the call routing, applications like voicemail, conferencing, call queuing and agents, contact centre, music on hold, and call parking are features that can be built right into the softswitch. The capacity of the calls and applications is very much based on the capacity of the PCs/servers. Moreover, it can also be integrate with other business technologies which run on open platform.
In short, with softswitch, no one is telling you how your telephony system runs, or what technology you are limited to. If you want it, you can have it. Softswitch allows you to have the freedom to develop your own innovations.
